Gemstones Can Last Forever – Secrets To Increasing Their Longevity

It is a common saying that diamonds are forever. Maybe they are but maybe they are not. In reality very few things in this world can last forever and precious stones and gemstones definitely do not fall in this category. Gemstones are essentially formed by minerals, rocks or petrified material. Gemstones are also organically formed, such as amber which is fossilized tree resin.  Most stones are found in a roughed-up condition, after which they go through several chemical processes which enhance their color and give them more refined shape.

You need to take care of your gems, of your precious stones and if that’s not done they can break off, lose their shine and even become brittle. Some gemstones are also very soft, while a few others can easily be damaged by heat, vibration and chemicals. The precious stones also react to light, acids, cleansers etc. It is commonly seen that certain gemstones change their color after they are dipped in chemicals due to some chemical reaction. Even brushing a gemstone roughly can bring scratches to the surface. Do you know that even direct sunlight can take away the brilliance of certain gemstones?

Basic Things to Remember

  • When you are not using a gemstone, you must store it carefully, in a drawer or a covered container or in a jewelry roll. All gemstones should be separately stored.
  • Gemstones, especially the therapeutic ones, need to be handled with extreme care. They are particularly very fragile and can easily break, chip, scratch. Take care of gemstones such as Fluorite, Purple Rainbow, Malachite, Mother of Pearl etc.
  • Try not to store precious and semi-precious stones near strong electromagnetic fields such as television and computers. These may disrupt the gemstones’ energies.
  • When undergoing an X-ray - at a hospital, dentist or at the airport security, remove the gemstone from your body. Gemstones can absorb X-rays and release them later into the wearer’s aura.
  • Remove gemstones when swimming in chlorinated pools or hot tubs. Chlorine can adversely affect the surface of gems.
  • Care must be taken of avoiding smoking and wearing synthetic perfume when wearing therapeutic gemstones. The fumes released from these can interfere with the free flow of a gemstone’s energy.
  • When going to bed, remove the necklace with a gemstone. Instead, keep it near the pillow.
  • Remember to remove any gemstone when working out or undergoing intense physical activity.

Common Methods of Cleanse Gemstones At Home

If you want your gemstones to last forever, you have to take care of them. Whether you are a connoisseur of precious stones or a novice, some basic knowledge of how to clean them is essential. The below mentioned methods should be used carefully and not randomly. You must also remember that regularly wiping a gemstone with soft cloth does wonders in keeping them sparklingly clean.

You would probably be advised to buy a gemstone cleanser to keep them clean. But you should keep in mind that certain gemstones can adversely react to cleansers and should be avoided. Generally speaking, however, there are four common methods of cleaning gemstones at home.

Method 1 - Rinsing With Water

One of the safest ways to clean gemstones is by rinsing them in clean water. You can do it two to three times a week. It is best to use water that’s in room temperature – neither too hot nor too cold. Dip the jewelry with the gemstone for about 60 seconds in the water and remove it. You can also use mild, non-synthetic soap on gemstones that tolerate rinsing. However it is important to remember that you cannot and must not rinse gemstones such as Mother of Pearl, Indigo and Malachite etc.

Method 2 – Plant Rejuvenation

This method is deemed useful as plants are known to generate living energy field that can absorb disharmonious energies and transform them. You can wrap gemstone jewelry around a healthy house plant and leave it untouched for several days. This method can be used two to three times, if required.

Method 3 – Rinsing in A Salt Bed

The second popular method of cleaning gemstones, especially the therapeutic ones is to rinse them in a salt bed. Salt is used as a cleansing material because it can absorb the disharmonious energies. This method can be used twice or thrice weekly. All you need to do is take a bowl with half-inch salt and dip the gemstone onto it for at least an hour. The same bowl of salt can be used for about two weeks.  If you are planning to cleanse ocean stones such as pearl or coral, make sure to use seal salt and not table salt.

Method 4 – Sunbath

As we all know, sunshine helps cure several illnesses. Similarly, sunshine also helps clean, energize and revitalize gemstones. This method can be used once in two weeks. It is best to directly expose the gemstone to sunshine, keeping it on the ground. However avoid over-exposing the precious stone.
