Where is Labradorite found?

The name of this stone comes from the place in which it was first found, which Labrador in Canada is. It is also found in Greenland, Finland, Russia, Italy, Madagascar, Scandinavia, Mexico and the USA. The stone that is found in Finland is called Spectrolite as it is to some extent different, and it shows the full range of colors.

  • Labradorite was found in 1770. A new source was later found in 1940.
  • Large slabs of substandard Labradorite are used in the construction of buildings as a facing material.
  • Labradorite is believed to honour the Welsh Goddess of the heavenly bodies, known as the Arianrhod.
  • Labradorite is not associated with any of the zodiac signs and is not even a traditional birthstone.

Labradorite is a much admired semi-precious gemstone in the present times, because of it not only being colorful, but also the captivating shimmering surface that it holds. It is said to have power over a number of powerful metaphysical properties.

On Moh’s scale of hardness, Labradorite measures about 6-6.5. It occurs in mafic igneous rocks. It also is found in metamorphic “amphibolites” and as a detritus element of some sediment.
