Lesedi La Rona, a name for World’s second largest diamond

Lucara Diamond Corp., who discovered the world’s second largest 1,111-carat diamond, has been given a name ‘Lesedi La Rona’ which means ‘Our Light,’ by Thembani Moitlhobogi. Thembani Moitlhobogi, who named the stone, won the prize of $2,196 i.e. BWP 25,000, as per the report submitted by the Lucara.

In a competition among Botswanan locals, along with the miner’s employees, the stone that was found in Botswana in November has to be named, and the winner would be awarded the $2,196 (BWP 25,000) prize, as per Lucara’s statement. Consequently, the stone was named as ‘Lesedi La Rona’ that means ‘Our Light’. Thembani Moitlhobogi got the credit to name the world’s second largest 1,111-carat diamond. Lucara Diamond Corp, on January 18 has commenced the contest to name the type-IIa diamond, the second-largest diamond found in the globe and the largest diamond ever recovered from the Botswana mines of Lucara. The entrants were invited to propose a suggested name along with the reason for their “stone’s name” choice. As per Lucara’s statement, the company has had more than 11,000 entrances. The statement too reads that the Global audit firm Ernst & Young was appointed by the corporation to make sure the transparency and independence of the whole procedure. In the panel to judge the entries, five executives from Lucara in addition to the Karowe mine was invited, they had to evaluate and in order to bring the fair decision they were not permitted to know the name of the participator. The role of the Ernst & Young was to retrieve the name of the “winning diamond name” winner. William Lamb, CEO and President of the company stated that ’Lesedi La Rona’ signifies the pride and history of the Botswanan citizens.
